In addition, four new audio podcasts have been produced and are posted on YouTube. Topics include seizures and first aid, myths and stereotypes, treatment, and pregnancy and epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Phenome/Genome Project (www.epgp.org), sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, is the largest research study ever created to identify genes that influence epilepsy and genes that affect an individual’s response to seizure medications. As of June 2011, more than 3,400 participants have enrolled in the project through epilepsy centers across the country. Additional volunteers are still needed to provide a blood sample and participate in interviews. The goal is to use this information to understand what causes epilepsy, which treatments might be effective for an individual, and why some families have multiple relatives with epilepsy.

Numerous safeguards are in place to protect the privacy of participants. Participants will receive a small compensation for their time, and can participate by phone and mail from anywhere in the U.S.

EPGP is looking for two types of participants:
1)      People who have been diagnosed with epilepsy, and also have a brother, sister, parent, or child with epilepsy
2)      People who have been diagnosed with one of several types of rare epilepsy and both biological parents are willing to participate. These types of epilepsies include seizures due to: Infantile Spasms, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, Polymicrogyria, or Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia.

  Recommendations for Care

Getting the best treatment from the right doctor at the right time is key for people  with epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation’s Professional Advisory Board has developed two new booklets with this goal in mind. The booklets help people know when to seek treatment for seizures and contain information about new onset seizures, patients already taking epilepsy medications, uncontrolled seizures and making the most of your office visit. Take a look at them here. “Recommendations for Care of Children with Epilepsy” and “Recommendations for Care of Adults with Epilepsy”.

Accredited online training in Epilepsy and Seizure Response for EMS personnel is now available. The online training is free, and the user can receive free continuing education hours from CECBEMS. We all recognize the growing need to provide information to EMS personnel about responding to individuals with epilepsy and seizure-related calls. We also realize that these professionals need educational information in a format that is easy to access and convenient for their busy schedules. This approximately 45 minute course aims to train EMS personnel on seizure recognition, correct response to seizures, and awareness of the unique needs of people with epilepsy who they may encounter.
