About the Seminar
This program will present an overview of renal anatomy, normal kidney function, how toxins and waste are removed from the blood stream and how the kidneys keep the body in balance. The primary causes of kidney disease, the difference between acute kidney failure and chronic kidney failure; how kidney disease is staged and how to live healthfully with CKD; and what renal replacement therapies are available will be discussed.
Louann Elliott, RN, CDN
Louann is a chronic kidney disease educator for Fresenius Medical Care. She has been with FMC since 2000, working first as a nurse providing dialysis treatments to patients then as the Education Coordinator, teaching staff how to perform dialysis and all components surrounding treatments. She currently provides education directly to patients referred to her from a physician group, presents Treatment Option Programs to the public at large and provides education to health care professionals and other groups as requested.
Objectives
Louann came to dialysis with extensive work history in healthcare. Besides healthcare, Louann also has a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. In addition to working with developmentally disabled adults, she has taught art to adult students at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and at Chatfield College in Cincinnati.
By attending this seminar, participants will be able to:
1. Define the basic components of the kidney;
2. Describe the main functions of the kidney;
3. Explain what the nephrons do;
4. Establish what hormones are produced by the kidneys.
